A Little Girl Talk from Pam101

The photo that slapped Pam101 across her well made up face
Pam101 has a very normal AM routine. I am all about my routine. Alarm goes off, I yell at NPR to shut the hell up...mumble something about how I hate politics...then snooze for a bit. Blackberry alarm goes off...I yell at it and then snooze for another 10 minutes.  Finally, I give into the Smarties on NPR and make the effort to get out bed. I roll out of bed only to usually fall down because I forget that at age 30 my knees always hurt and my ankle is a bitch to me now. So, after I hobble my old ass to the bathroom I am ready to start my day. I won't bore you with the usual "I have nothing to wear, I hate all my clothes, why don't I look like Gisele" topics.  I  apply the same make-up, change the perfume daily, pack my lunch and head out the door.

Skip across the street to my bus stop (this AM it was a rainy mess but I didn't let it get me my tinge of a hangover had me a little ho-hum but I shook it off like a good Polish/Russian girl) and waited a few minutes to hop on a not so crowded bus.Take the S2 to Metro stop...hop on train for a few stops.  I love the metro commute. I get to read...people watch. I really am a very happy commuter.

Like most metro stops there is a Starbucks right beside it. If the line isn't too long I will go in for a little breakfast treat. Today, the line was short. WIN!  Get in the short line and when I make it to the paper stand I like to look at the cover of the NY Times. And then it hits me.

The photo. The photo that screams at me as I stand in a line that I realize that not once this AM did I remember we are in a war. The photo was a slap of reality. Here I am going about my day, complaining about Russian Standard delicious vodka and my ankle and knees and there are men and women dying everyday in a war I need a photo to remember we are in.

And of course you know I am a crier and I tear up. I am angry at myself for not remembering but I am also so sad for all of the people involved. The soldiers, their families, the people of the countries we are fighting in. I pull it together (do some crazy amounts of blinking and the tears subside). I order my Venti Misto with extra foam and I told myself I am going to blog this. I am going to blog that I hate that I need a photo to remind me of the war our country is in.

So, my question is...Am I the only one? Am I the only one who wakes up and doesn't remember we are in a war? I don't feel like I have sacrificed anything. I haven't donated my time to make a difference, I haven't given blood...I haven't written a solider....there has to be something I can do. There just has to be.

The Lions of Vodka

As mentioned Pam101 met up with some friends last night for some drinks, eats and some girl talk. All of which were great! We drank, we ate...we laughed. Then the next thing I know Lily and I are eating burgers at Five Guys (so so so very good) and I am downing a Root Beer. Head home...crawl into bed and think..."OMG...I am getting old!" I can't even have two martinis (old lady drink) and stay up past 11:00. I am LAME! When did this happen?

I am blaming the Russian Standard vodka I had last night. That stuff is good! You barely can taste the alcohol (well I couldn't but my friends hated it). But the stuff sneaks up on you like a lion does a gazelle. It just waits until the right moment and then BAM! You end up at Five Guys.
It was a great night!

Salami, Pepperoncini, and Chevre Sandwich

Thanks, Food52 and Someonewhobakes

In my family, we call this "The Sandwich", and it's because it's basically perfect. We have been making it for years and years, usually to take along for picnics or any kind of long traveling. They travel beautifully and they only get better with time (up to a point, of course!). Just wrap it up in foil and toss it in your bag!

* 1 24-inch baguette
* 2-3 ounces chevre
* 3 ounces salami
* 3 ounces provolone
* 1 roasted red pepper, sliced
* 3-4 artichoke hearts, quartered
* 2-3 sun-dried tomatoes, julienned
* 2-3 tablespoons black or green olive tapenade
* 2-3 pepperoncini, sliced
* 2 cups arugula

1. Slice the baguette horizontally and pull out some of the bread from inside each half and discard (or save for breadcrumbs!). Spread chevre on the bottom half of bread. Arrange meats and cheeses on top of that.

2. Top with red peppers, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, and pepperoncinis. Top with arugula, piled up to keep it in place. Smear top half of bread with tapenade and place on top of arugula, catching any stuff that fell out and stuffing it back in. Slice the whole thing in half with a serrated knife. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and again with foil, then refrigerate until needed, preferably 24-36 hours to allow flavors to meld.

Serves 2 foot-long sandwiches

Great...he works out all the time and doesn't eat cake....

I think my hopes of having Sid fall in love with me just got crushed. He doesn't eat junk food and he works all the time. Shit. I just threw away the cupcake and am off to the gym.

Pam101 is Russian

Pam101 will be out with some BFF's tonight drinking some good Russian vodka. Yes, I am going to get a martini (or two) and have a night with some great friends! Can't wait!

A Little Girl Talk from Pam101

Hats. I love hats.  They are fashionable, glamorous...striking even.  All the ladies in Europe wear them. Every social event in Europe seems hat appropriate. Weddings, baby related events, funerals, etc. All call for fabulous hats. So, why aren't we Americans doing it?
I want to go to an English wedding
I mean our Founding Father's ladies all wore hats. The stylish ladies of the 1800's all the way through the Mad Men era all rocked hats. Why did the trend stop? Is it because we burned our bras?  Maybe it is because the ladies who burned their bras decided that we should stop acting like their Mothers and start new trends.  So...out when glamorous hats.

The question is do we bring it back? I am all about "being your own person, having your own identity" and I wouldn't even blink twice if I saw a lady wearing a crazy hat to work (well maybe I would blink) but I would be jealous of her/his bravery. I might wear bright crazy colors in a town that is mostly gray, black and navy but I just don't think I am bold enough to rock a hat.

To those of you who are brave and fearless enough to wear stylish hats...I applaud you. I am envious and maybe I will someday follow your lead!

Boo101...Make me this drink when I visit!

A delicious cocktail I can make while visiting Boo!!

Tequila Fizz

2 oz. Milagro Silver Tequila
1.25 oz Lime Topo Chico*
1 oz. Fresh Organic Lime Juice

Pour over ice and stir.
Garnish with a organic lime wheel.

Pam101 note: I love Topo Chico! I only have it when I am in Austin!

Both Brittany S Pearce and Britney Spears killed it on Glee last night!!!

Check out Britney's cameo's on last night's awesome episode of Glee!

You should all be so lucky....

Jax at my 30th party!
Pam101 is a very lucky girl. I have an amazing family, a niece and nephew I adore, I've traveled the world and I make it a point to laugh and smile everyday (life is simply to short not too).  Basically...I am trying to say I have a great life. And what makes my life so I surround myself with people who love me and who I love!

Last night as Jackie and I were having a great dinner (roasted veggies with whole wheat pasta and feta) I realized how lucky I am that she is my friend.  She makes me laugh, she is smart, she loves Vampire Diaries and she brings wine every time she visits! I wish you all could have Jackie/Jax/JRose as a friend!

DC is a tricky town. But I think that in the almost six years that I have lived here I have snagged the best people in the city to be my BFF's!

Whole-Wheat Pasta with Broccolini and Feta

Thanks, Food Network Kitchens

* 1 medium shallot, thinly sliced
* 1 bunch broccolini (about 10 ounces), stems cut into 2-inch stems, and florets
* 1 medium bunch radishes, trimmed and very thinly sliced
* 12 ounces whole-wheat rigatoni
* 1 tablespoon sherry wine vinegar
* 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
* 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
* Freshly ground black pepper
* 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
* 7 ounces feta cheese, crumbled

Put the shallots in a bowl and cover with cold water. Soak for about 10 minutes; drain.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and salt it generously. Fill a medium bowl with ice water and salt it as well. Add the broccolini to the boiling water and cook until crisp-tender, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the radish slices, and cook 30 seconds, more. Use a slotted spoon or strainer to scoop out the vegetables and plunge them immediately into the ice water. Drain the vegetables, pat them very dry.

Add the pasta to the same pot of boiling water, and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente, about 8 to 9 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Whisk the sherry vinegar, orange zest, the 3/4 teaspoon salt and pepper, to taste, in a large serving bowl. Gradually whisk in the oil, starting with a few drops and then adding the rest in a steady stream, to make a dressing.

Toss the rigatoni, broccolini, radish and shallot with the dressing. Add the feta cheese and toss lightly. Serve warm or room temperature.

Dancing With Myself

AM Edition of the Hotness

I know what you are thinking...why in the world would Pam101 pick collapsible lawn chairs as today's AM Hotness?! Well, I will tell you why! Because in 8 days I will be in Austin. And then I will working with Boo to see how much we can sneak into ACL inside these chairs! Yes, Pam101 and Boo101 are working on perfecting "the art of sneaking things into music festivals". See, last year Boo101 was knocked up so we got away with sneaking food in (you know prego chicks have to eat) but this year we have to be super sneaky. Wish us luck!

A moment with Conan

Pam101 made a mistake....

Not to toot my own horn but I am a really good cook. I hardly make a bad meal and I very very rarely mess up a recipe. But last night...I totally botched a meal.  I knew it as soon as I did it. I was trying to make lentil soup and I knew that I should have followed the recipe but I didn't. And the minute I added more lentils than called for I said, "ohhh...shitttttt".
My lentil soup is more a lentil blob of yuckiness. And being that I was raised to never waste food I will  make myself eat it probably for the next four days.  Oh, well. I will redeem myself tonight!

Some Breaking Dawn News....

Here is some news for all you Twilight fans:

Maggie Grace will play a new vampire threat to Kristen Stewart's Bella in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Grace, who played Liam Neeson's in-distress daughter in Taken, will play the role of Irina in the final installments of the Stephenie Meyer novel, which director Bill Condon is directing in two separate films.

Irina is a member of the Denali coven, considered cousins to the Cullen clan as the only other "vegetarian" vampire group. When Irina blames the Cullens for the death of her lover, her actions set in motion a terrifying chain of events.

9-year old Mackenzie Foy is inches away from signing on to play Renesmee, Edward and Bella’s vampire/human love child that’s a central role in the final installment ofThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

It’s not yet clear how the diminutive actress will portray the character who ages a full 17 years in only seven. Sources have suggested that director Bill Condon will employ similar digital effects to those used by David Fincher in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, where Foy’s face would be digitally transferred onto the face of a younger child. It’s also probable that the studio will hire a younger child in some capacity, too.

The first of two pictures will be released by Summit Entertainment on November 18, 2011, followed by the finale on November 16, 2012.

So...what is the difference?!

What's the difference between white eggs and brown eggs?

At one of the wineries this past weekend they had some chickens just roaming around. Which made me think, what is the difference between brown and white eggs?

Here is what Straight Dope told me:

There is one major, MAJOR difference between brown eggs and white eggs.

Brown eggs are brown and white eggs are white.

According to the Egg Nutrition Board (and who should know better?), "White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. There is no difference in taste or nutrition between white and brown eggs."

PM Edition of the Hotness

Now we don't have to drink it all in one sitting

One of the ladies at the winery told me that red wine can last at least three weeks in the fridge! This is good to Pam101 felt the need to finish off a bottle in a sitting because she thought it was going to go bad.

In just a handful of days....

In just a few days I will be in Austin for the Austin City Limits music festival. Me, Boo and a few of our fantastic friends! Can't wait!!!

I miss Jimmy, Tina and Amy!!
